The United States Tennis Association hosted a two day Tennis Training Symposium with the goal of linking scientific principles to practical application. The event was held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center (home of the US Open) on October 24th and 25th, 2008. Over 60 participants were in attendance and the symposium had a combination of sessions that involved presentations in the classroom, on the court and in the gym. The participants included physical therapists, athletic trainers, strength and conditioning specialists, medical doctors, researchers, massage therapists and advanced tennis coaches. The symposium was opened by Dr. Mark Kovacs (Manager of Sport Science for the USTA) and the event was fortunate to have two keynote presenters - Dr. Brian Hainline and Dr. Don Chu. (Dr. Hainline was the Chief Medical Officer for the US open for more than 15 years, and is currently the Chair of the ITF Sport Science and Medicine Commission.) He presented on health and medical issues seen at the US Open. Dr. Don Chu is a physical therapist, athletic trainer and strength and conditioning specialist and delivered three separate presentations on power training for tennis, the tennis shoulder and a clinical session on the most common injuries and treatments seen in tennis players.
Along with keynote presenters the audience was exposed to tennis-specific presentations on biomechanics, physiology and movement training by Dr. Kovacs; a practical session in the gym titled "Strength and Power Training for Tennis" by Satoshi Ochi (USTA Strength and Conditioning Specialist); and a presentation by Dr. Allen Lebovits titled "Stress and Pain in the Tennis Athlete". One of the major highlights of the symposium was a tour of the player area used during the US Open, and the tennis movement presentation was performed on Center Court in Arthur Ashe stadium. All participants were able to step on Center Court and take pictures in the largest tennis-only stadium in the world. Thanks must go out to individuals who spent time to organize and prepare the symposium: Jessica Battaglia, Bob Russo and Whitney Kraft.
